North Little Rock is part of the Memphis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first humans to live in what is now North Little Rock were Paleo-Indians who hunted and gathered plants and animals near the confluence of Big Creek and Arkoma River in what is now northwestern Pulaski County. They built small villages by ousting other Indian groups from their hunting grounds as they advanced through this area. By 1000 AD, these Paleo-Indians had developed into the Archaic period people of Arkansas. In 1821, Colonel James K. Polk sold 1/7th of all remaining land east of the Mississippi River to John Tipton for $5 thousand dollars ($ million today). This donated land included present day North Little Rock and much of central Pulaski County including present dayArkansas City (northwest corner)). Tipton named his new town after himself – Polk City USA – which he hoped would stimulate development westward along Arkansas Avenue which he planned to travel on his way to become President during the Mexican–American War (1846–48). On February 15, 1827, James K. Polk died suddenly while traveling through Iowa Territory on his way back from acquiring more territory for America at San Miguel de Allende in Mexico; this event helped spur American expansionism during that time period leading directly to our current conflict with China over definable borders between that country and its immediate neighbors.– See Wikipedia:James K.
