In 1927, an application was filed to Regents of University of Arkansas for authorization to establish a Pistol & Shotgun Range within University Grounds[7]; this request was granted and NRA membership began offered to members of the public who could demonstrate proficiency with pistols only. Little Rock, Arkansas is a city in the U.S. state of Arkansas. The population was 25,521 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat and largest city of Pulaski County. Little Rock is located in the East Central region of Arkansas and straddles both banks of the Arkoma River. The first permanent settlers in what is now Little Rock were white men who came from Kentucky and Tennessee in 1814 during the Mexican–American War. They named their new town after Major General Sam Houston, who had helped lead Texas to independence from Mexico. In 1836, when Arkansas became a part of the United States, Little Rock was chosen as its capital by President Andrew Johnson because it was centrally located in his Midwestern states and had easy access to railroad transportation. In 1907, a group of businessmen led by Jeptha Meeks bought land east of downtown for what would become North Little Rock High School; they renamed it after themselves (Meeks-Worrell). By 1912, NorthLittleRock had a population of about 1,500 people and was home to two churches and one school. A fire destroyed most of downtown in 1954 but quickly rebuilt with support from local businesses and citizens. The present day skyline seen today began to take shape when ARKCO Telecom built a shopping mall on four blocks south central in 1984-85 while also building an office tower on 5th Street Just northwest Of Main Street which still stands today
