North Little Rock is a city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. North Little Rock is the largest city in Pulaski County and one of its four original cities. It was established on December 12, 1879 as a result of the consolidation of two other small towns in Pulaski County- North Little Rock and Arkadelphia. The first settlement in what would become North Little Rock was made by John Salyer and his family on November 25, 1878. The town name came from an old Indian word meaning "place where buffalo were grazing." The first permanent settler in what would become North LittleRock was George Witherspoon on February 17, 1879. He built a log cabin on the east side of Arkansas River north of present day University Drive. Witherspoon named his town after General Andrew Jackson because he felt that General Jackson represented much of the good that had been done for Pulaski County during his lifetime. In October 1889, three men who had migrated to Arkansas from Missouri started a wheat farm west of present day I-40 near Arkadelphia which became known as White Sands Prairie. This area became important due to its location close to several wagonroads and water supplies necessary for agricultural production. In 1890, white settlers began arriving from Illinois with intentions of establishing themselves along these transportation routes into easternArkansas undeveloped areas rich with natural resources such as coal and oil reserves that lay beneath the surface waiting to be discovered. Jimmie Hightower founded Hightower Oil & Gas Company here in 1901 based on his discovery of five hundred million barrels (mmb) worth of oil located under Archuleta Plains just south of Arkadelphia
