North Little Rock, Arkansas is a city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 22,362 at the 2010 census. It is the ninth-largest city in Pulaski County and the third-largest city in Arkansas. North Little Rock is home to the University of Central Arkansas and other major Pan American institutions. The economy of North Little Rock is based on services and manufacturing. The history of North Little Rock began with three families who founded what would become the first town in this area: Jesse James Lucas, his brother Johnathan Lucas, and their fatherland Andrew Waddell (1825-1911). James Waddell had been born near Pine Bluff, Arkansas; he moved to this area about 1852 when he saw an opportunity for land that lay between two rivers: the White River and the Arkoma River. He settled on a tract of land that he named "Little Rock" after himself and his parents (Johnathan's father also named him "Rocky"). In 1868, General William Troup advanced $50000 towards purchasing Hardin County from Aaron Hill as part of a national loan program known as Van Buren Purchase. This money was used to purchase 640 acres (266 ha) east of present day North Little Rock from Benjamin Fenton Jones for $14000 dollars ($ today). In 1870 David Haughton purchased 160 acres southeast of present day North Little Rock from Thomas Jarratt for $4000 dollars ($ today). It wasn't until 1893 when Elijah Caldwells bought 2160 acres north of present day North Little ROCK from Ephraim Randolph for $6000 dollars ($ today)). This purchase set off a chain reaction which led to over 60 purchases by individuals or businesses totaling almost 350 acres over 10 years which formed what became known as "the Rancho Seco Domain". The original ranchos were divided into tracts following World War II when it became apparent that there were too many farmers in one small area - this caused much contention among those who had acquired land since 1893. Finally in 1951 all but 10% or so of these original ranchos were sold off to individual owners once again creating what we now know as "the Rancho Seco Domain". Today there are still some parcels remaining out there not currently under ownership but subject to development potential by either governmental entities or private interests depending on how they would use/alter/maintain said parcel(s). Throughout its history various aspects have contributed to shaping NorthLittleRock: Its location on two important river crossings; its ties with Arkoma County through trade, transportation, culture and education; its role withinArkansas' economic landscape; its relationship with neighboring cities such as downtown Springdale and Rogersville; its status within rural Pulaski County... These factors have helped make NorthLittle rock an integral community unto itself both geographically and socially
