North Little Rock, Arkansas was founded on May 10, 1861 by the citizens of Pulaski County. The city was named for the North Little Rock Post Office which had been established in 1859. The post office moved to its present location in 1881 and remains in operation today. In 1865, the Northern Arkansas Railroad was built through North Little Rock and soon became one of the most important transportation arteries in Arkansas. With its interchange with the Memphis & Nashville Railroad and its access to points north and west, North Little Rock quickly emerged as a booming commercial center. Due to this growth, North Little ROCK experienced wrenching changes over time. In 1924, when Prohibition began to take hold throughout America, many Arkansans abandoned their drinker's rights in order to survive during an era when drugs were king. This left a lasting impact on the city; today it is one of few places in America whererictly alcohol consumption is allowed. Even after prohibition ended, business continued booming until roughly 1990 when a combination of economic hard times and stricter state laws caused some closings and job losses within the downtown core. Since then, various initiatives have been undertaken to revive downtown NorthLittleRock including First Friday night art galleries Night Market events which bring artists from around town for local foodie demos etc., as well as renovation projects that have brought more life back into buildings that were once neglected or abandoned
