Gun targets have been a part of North Little Rock, Arkansas since the 1870s. The first target was created in 1875 by W.H. Smith and Sons for use at the Fairgrounds. In 1906, the City of North Little Rock purchased an old rifle range on Second Street from John Dunlap and changed its name to the Dunlap Range using his initials. That year, J.D. Dunham made his first target out of wood and canvas at this range. The next year, 1911, Targetmaster Wm Henson began selling targets here in North Little Rock as well as setting up displays throughout town at local businesses. In 1916, Mr. Henson donated a stand to the city which became known as the Henson Target Stand today (now located at 307 E First St). By 1925*, allTargetmasters had been replaced by Gurney & Bros., who continued to operate until 1984 when they were sold to Bigham Manufacturing Company Incorporated.. In 1924, there was an effort to get money set aside for a new armory in NorthLittleRock but it failed due to lack of interest from citizens*. At that time, guns were still being used predominately for hunting and most Targets were used for practice only; however, some were established as actual shooting ranges (). Between 1934-1935*, Army Captured Enemy Weapons School courses took place here at Dunlap Range (); these classes taught NRA instructors how to Properly clean and maintain firearms* Additionally during this period*, major improvements were made including new floors/ Walls/ Doors/ Gateways installed on buildings along Second Street (), making it possible for Targets residents and guests alike* Since World War II* stringent regulations have been placed upon gun owners in America (* see Gun Control Legislation section below*) For example*, handguns must be registered with state police before they can be possessed or shot * Additionally currently (2017), Targets is home of "The Gun Show" which is one of only a few showrooms specifically devoted to firearms sales * This event typically features over 100+ handmade firearms from all over America * From 1915-1984*, no record exists showing any changes taking place within Targets itself *. However%, since 1984 until present day(*), there has been constant growth within both Clubhouse membership (+50%) AND business activity (+500%!). Even though many changes have occurred within Target's history (& see below *) nothing has truly taken away forever the sense of community involvement enjoyed by current members & guests alike*. It is safe to say that gun targets have long played an important role in Native American culture & society in Arkansas* They are often seen as spiritual symbols representing strength & resilience during times of hardship or conflict.* Additionallytargeting has also been utilized commercially by various businesses (&see below) throughout our state& region* It should come as no surprise then that there continues today an intense focus upon improving Target conditions (&see Plaza) through regular maintenance projects combined with increased club membership). In fact*, targeterChapters across America are working towards developing similar programs(*See Chapter Breakdowns Below*) . Achieving such objectives will not only ensure excellent shooting conditions each time we shoot but also create lasting memories for future generations!
