The area that is now North Little Rock was part of the much larger territory called Wichita County. The Wichita people were a farming and hunting society that lived near the confluence of the Kansas and Arkansas Rivers. Their village was located on an acreage known as "Horn Hill" today. In 1827, land east of what is now North Little ROCK was taken from the Wichita people by General John Ewing during his Expedition against Chief Osage Nation. This action led to a series of hostile negotiations between General Ewing andChief Osage over control of this new land. In 1828, Major James Bowie moved from Fort Smith, Arkansas to take up residence in Wichita County alongside other settlers including David Ransom and John Sibley. By 1830, North Little ROCK had become a small community with a population of about fifty residents. Archer's Mill became operational in this early period; it was one of the first steamboats to navigate the Arkansas River. Archer's Mill also served as headquarters for both Confederate Captain Robert Ewell Moore's forces during World War I and for Colonel Sherman Hinton's army following its victory at Pea Ridge in December 1865. During Reconstruction (1870-1914), North Little Rock experienced dramatic changes due to its location within newly acquired American Indian Territory which had been ceded to America after the Mexican-American War ended in 1848 without any actual fighting between Americans and Mexicoians taking place within it!
