North Little Rock, Arkansas is a city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 18,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pulaski County. North Little Rock was founded on April 7, 1907 by citizens of Indian Territory who moved to what is now Pulaski County to escape forced relocation during the Dawes Act of 1898. The city became a U.S. Post Office on November 3, 1911. The area that would become North Little Rock was first inhabited by groups of Wichita and Arapaho Native Americans who hunted and gathered animal feed near what is now downtown North Little Rock. By 1824 some settlers had shown interest in the land and began planting crops thereabouts. In 1861 General James Wofford discovered oil shale near modern day North Little Rock while exploring for oil resources in eastern Arkansas; this led to significant development in the area as oil companies drilled for additional reserves throughout much of Arkansas before statehood in 1896 made such exploration illegal In 1909 residents of Indian Territory decided they wanted their own municipal government and formed an organization called "The Citizens' Association" which campaigned for incorporation into the larger town of Fort Smith, Oklahoma On April 7, 1907 – two days after the opening day of World War I – NorthLittleRock's incorporation proceedings were completed with Mayor Clyde Riggs being elected as its first official mayor In 1912 when Pulaski County was organized from portions of Johnson County it included all or part of present-day NortheastArkansas (northwest corner including present-day Northwest Arkansas), much later designated as SoutheastArkansas . On July 10th 1914 residents voted to annex most or all territory located east and south Of Elmira Street including current-day Northwest Arkansas annexation proclamation language said: "I declare that I am quite satisfied with how things are going here today; it doesn't seem like we're doing anything wrong". This action brought about new growth within present day Northwest Arkansas northeast of Elmira Street until then only marginally populated areas such as Pine Bluff west central Parkdale east central Parkdale northcentral Parkdale consisted mostly small towns with few people living more than a mile from their respective schools
Arkansas was founded in 1836 by the United States government as the Arkansas Territory. The state was admitted to the Union on August 14, 1907. The first black person to be elected to the Arkansas Senate was John A. Smith, who won in 1947. In 1960, Richard M. Nixon became the 44th president of the United States and he traveled to Little Rock for two days for a primary election campaign stop before his inauguration on November 4th.
