North Little Rock, Arkansas is an American city in the Pulaski County of Arkansas. The population was 21,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pulaski County and home to North Little Rock High School, which is one of two high schools in the Arkansan school system. North Little Rock also has a small airport located just east of town. The first European settlers in what would become Arkansas were Frenchmen who arrived in 1670 as part of La Salle's expedition. They named their new land Nouvelle-Orléans after Louis XIV's brother, who had ruled France since 1547. In 1785, Englishman James Wilkinson purchased land near where present-day North Little Rock stands from Pierre du Lac for £1,000 from Jean Baptiste Chouteau. Wilkinson renamed his new settlement Arkadelphia after George Washington's capital City of Philadelphia – but it didn't take off as planned because no one wanted to live on what turned out to be a very difficult and unhealthy area with only a few trees and not much water resources. A group of entrepreneurs decided to make Arkadelphia something more than just a Indian trading post; they started building homes and businesses around 1820 and called themselves the "Arkansas Post Company". By 1830, there were over 100 people living in Arkadelphia – including some who had bought property from Wilkinson years earlier! In 1836, John Crouch became the first African American to live permanently within the United States when he moved from Mobile, Alabama toArkadelphia with his family. At that time, Arkadelphia was still mainly white; however, by 1840 most residents were black or mulatto (people descended from Africans). When slavery was abolished in America following Reconstruction in 1865, most African Americans leftArkadelphia for all sorts of reasons: jobs available outside cotton plantations; free blacks living near white neighborhoods attracted attention from Ku Klux Klan members looking for slaves to kidnap or drive out; or simply because they couldn't support themselves anymore without working on farms or other manual labor while risking being kidnapped or sold into slavery again! After another decade without any significant progress being made towards developing Arkadelphia into a thriving community for black citizens – especially given its location right next door to one of America's largest slave markets – Mayor Isaac Purdie ordered the construction of North Little Rock High School starting in1878 as an alternative means for black students to get an education while they awaited freedom under General Sherman's Emancipation Proclamation issued six months earlier. With only $5 per student per year allocated towards education by state law at that time (!), ARKANSAN WAS THE FIRST STATE TO PROVIDE FREE EDUCATION TO ALL STUDENTS UNDER TWENTY ONE YEARS OF Age IN 1870! Little did Purdie know that this event would mark perhaps history’s most dramatic turning point regarding race relations within our own country… Ever! After many challenges and trials during those early years attending NOLRHS would prove invaluable both socially & academically(& we wouldn’t have “missed out” if it wasn’t for today’s Millenials!)
