North Little Rock is part of the Arkansas–Oklahoma Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Arkadelphia were Spanish traders in 1540. A small town named Arkadelphia developed on the north bank of the Arkansas River along its course from present-day North Little Rock to Tellico City (now Oklahoma City). A post office called Arkadelphia was established in 1817, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. Arkadelphia became a town when a branch railroad reached it from Fort Smith via Little Rock on December 17, 1872. The city's incorporation as a municipality occurred on November 3, 1903; however, due to its location at the confluence of several rivers and becauseArkadelphia had no courthouse or jail, it remained an unincorporated community until it became one of Pulaski County's nine cities on January 1, 1907. The discovery of oil near Arkadelphia by Exxon Oil Corporation led to an influx of people and businesses into North Little Rock during World War II; this growth caused traffic congestion on Main Street and other downtown streets which led to the development of wide boulevards system around town center that still exist today.
