In 1912, Mountain Home was founded by J.C. Whitney and his wife Ida as a citrus growing center on the Arkansas River. In 1922, the Whitney family sold their share of the business to Julius Rosenwald Jr., who renamed it Guggenheim Mercantile Corporation. The company grew rapidly in the 1920s and 1930s, becoming one of the leading retailers of optical equipment and supplies in North America. During World War II, Guggenheim Mercantile Corporation produced materials for military production including ray guns, optical sensors and light guides. In 1945, Guggenheim merged with Allied Signal Company to form United States Optical Corporation (USOC). USOC continued to produce optical products until its merger with Raytheon in 1987. At its peak in the early 1980s, USOC employed over 1,000 people across four divisions: optics research; marketing and sales; engineering support; and purchasing. The first school was built in 1889 by Mrs. Jnosseph Covington and operated for 10 years before being replaced by a gristmill which served as the town's first library from 1895 to 1907 In 1911, Mountain Home had a population of 1,500 residents and 100 stores; it annexed North Little Rock on April 12 that year to form a city-county government with its own police department In 1912, two schools were added: one for girls (Winthrop School) and one for boys (Lone Star School). In 1916, statehoodwas achieved when Arkansas attained full statehood following the passage of the 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution via referendum . On July 15 of that year, mountain home became an incorporated municipality under law #33-652 .In 1924 another fire destroyed most of downtown while leaving only four buildings standing; this fire also fueled much interest over dry fly farming techniques which soon replaced corn production as mainstay of local economy

In 1912, the townsite was patented to G.W. Barden and incorporated as a city on July 15, 1912. The city was named for General George Washington Hill (1779-1845), a hero of the Mexican War and one of the founders of Fort Smith (now Arkadelphia). Hill also donated land to create Mountain Home Park and Boulevard in 1924. The park includes an amphitheater, golf course, swimming pool, tennis courts, basketball court, and playgrounds for children from kindergarten through eighth grade. The community has a library with over 100 books including several by mountain home native Robert Frost and other authors
