Mountain Home is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 5,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Gate City metropolitan area. Mountain Home was founded in 1876 by citizens of nearby North Little Rock as a station on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. The name derived from a hilltop home called "Mountains" which served as a summer residence for local residents. In 1907, Mountain Home became an incorporated town under the name of Newtonia. In 1959, Newtonia changed its name to Mountain Home after approval by the Arkansas General Assembly. The townsite now occupies more than . The first post office in Mountain Home opened on December 12, 1876, and continued service until it was discontinued on November 15, 1909. During that time, it served both Newtonia and Mountain Home before becoming an independent municipality under its present name. In 1957-58, Mountain Home experienced some growth with the construction of Interstate 40 near the junction of U S Highway 91 and Arkansas State Route 472 (SR 472). That highway provided access to outside residents while still allowing residents within walking distance to get to their jobs or groceries without having to take long trips down SR 472 or into North Little Rock. As development around I-40 progressed over time (and traffic congestion increased), so too did allegations that developers were driving up prices for property in other municipalities through unrestricted building permits and reducing available municipal services such as water supply or fire protection availability when demand warranted those luxuries. A study published in "The Daily Oklahoman" in 1959 addressed these concerns by documenting how much money developers were making from unrestricted building permits while also cutting off vital municipal services; this study led to then-Governor Orval Faubus proclaiming October 1st as Local Government Election Day throughout Pulaski County in order to pressure developers into re-implementing regulations prohibiting unlimited building permits." In 1960-61 state legislators attempted unsuccessfully to pass a bill requiring that limits be placed on building permits; this act would later become known as "Faubus Law". On October 1st 1961 campaign signs advertising Faubus' new law began beingposted throughout Pulaski County; this event is typically considered one of the earliest examples of political campaigning using technology today. By 1964 there had been enough progress made towards limitingBuilding Permits that Faubus finally mounted an unsuccessful full frontal assault against what he saw as unlimited permit abuse; his effort failed due largely to public opposition from powerful economic interests who felt their business methods might be compromised if restrictions were put into place." During Faubus's eight year reign (1962-68), much progress was made towards limiting Building Permits however sporadic attempts were periodically made again during his final two years (1969 - 1971) seeking even broader exemptions tha previously granted; all despite repeated pleas from county commissioners seeking action." These efforts culminated with passage of House Bill 1093 which limited Building Permits statewide effective January 1st 1970." This law marked perhapsArkansas' most significant change since Federation & helped stem some Of The Economic Fluctuations That Affected Other Western TownsEarlier That Year." Mountain Home is a small town located in Pulaski County, Arkansas. The population was 2,090 as of the 2000 census. Mountain Home is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Van Buren Metropolitan Statistical Area and it is also included within the Arkansas City Micropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1892 by Myron Frye and his family. They named the community after Mount Hope, a mountain near their home in Tennessee. The Fryes owned many land parcels in Pulaski County, which they used to raise crops and build homes. In 1927, they sold all their land except for a small piece that still stands on Gay Street to the city of North Little Rock. In 1961, Mountain Home became an incorporated municipality with a governing body known as the Town Council. From then until 2001, Mountain Home had an Mayor-Council form of government with three members elected at-large from among its residents. On January 1, 2001, however, an amendment to the Arkansas Constitution repealed section 4 of article 6 of that document which allowed municipalities to have more than one councilmember per ward (up from two). As a result of this change in state law, Mountain Home's current mayor is Bill White who was first elected on November 3rd 2006
