Mountain Home is a city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 5,890 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pulaski County. It was founded in 1881 and named for General James F. Mountain, who had recently served as US Army commander in what is now southeastern Arkansas. In 1907, the first Post Office opened in Mountain Home after being built by local businessmen Hosea Howells and John Purdy. In 1912, the town name was changed to Mountain Home when it annexed the adjacent unincorporated community of Springdale. The City of Mountain Home incorporated on April 1, 1951. On December 6, 1960, a tornado struck the city; it killed nine people and injured over 50 others. On January 3, 1961, the City of Mountain Home renamed itself Pulaski County after then-Governor Orval Faubus (D). The population of Pulaski County grew rapidly from its early years until World War II when it shrunk as many Arkansans enlisted in military service or left for war abroad. By 1970 there were only 4 residents living within the city limits of Mountain Home proper while over 20% of that total lived outside its boundaries within either neighboring towns or rural counties which made up much of central Arkansas at that time. However during this time period there also began to be significant growth in nearby communities such as Springdale with a population increase reaching 100 through 1990 according to government records while mountain home's population only grew by 2 individuals between 1990-2000 before slowly declining again starting in 2007 due largely to several factors including jobs moving away from Muncie and other downtowns throughout northwest Arkansas along with problems with public schools funding across all levels becoming increasingly difficult to manage without raised taxes which have caused some families to leave since then although there has been some recent growth back into town Center thanks to businesses relocating therefrom elsewhere). When White Settlement failed to attract settlers, it reverted to its original name of Mountain Home in 1990. Mountain Home was founded in 1885 as a stage stop on the Arkansas & Missouri Railroad. In 1907, the town became part of Little Rock and was renamed after its founder, Hiram Mountain Home. The first post office in Mountain Home opened in 1887; it closed in 1908. In 1923, the town became an incorporated municipality with a population of 756 people. The townsite was annexed by Little Rock in 1959 and rejoined the city limits that year. The population of Mountain Home has grown steadily since then; at the 2010 census it had increased to 1,898 people
