The town's only store, established in 1892 by Charles Hirschman, closed its doors for good on July 1st, 1984 after more than 130 years of business. Today, most people identify themselves as Arkansan or simply live hereabouts full time and few if any businesses remain open that are not related to agriculture or ranching activities such as farming produce or cattle; these include three convenience stores (Albertsons), two banks (Citizens Bank & Trust Company and First National Bank), one restaurant (The Cottonwood), two retail gasoline stations (LPGA SuperStore - now part of ExxonMobil) and one RV dealership/parking lot (Arkansas Travelers Rest). The town has experienced a number of changes over its history including: from residential neighborhoods with large yards to small streets with fewer homes; from whitewashed buildings built for farmers to frame homes for sale during prohibition era days when alcohol was illegal; from a mainly agricultural economy to one based today largely on services providing goods and services such as education, health care, government employment and tourism; from an unincorporated area until its incorporation into Pulaski County as an incorporated municipality in 1907 through passage of the Arkansas Constitution allowing municipalities self-government with powers including zoning laws; finally culminating with its current form as an annexed city within Pulaski County following ratification by the state legislature in 1982.
Maumelle was founded in 1836 by pioneers, including John C.Maumelle and his wife Julia Axtell Maumelle, as a post office on the railroad between Fayetteville and Little Rock. The town's first store opened in 1837. By 1840, the population of Maumelle had reached 200 residents. In 1847, the Missouri Pacific Railroad began service to Maumelle from Little Rock; this made it possible for the town to become known as a transportation center. The first school in Maumelle was built in 1848; it served grades one through twelve. A grocery store and dry goods store were established in 1850. The first cotton gin was built in 1861; it became operational that year. The first telephone line was installed in 1865. In 1870, an all-purpose flour mill was built, followed by a lumberyard and sawmill two years later. A waterworks system was constructed in 1902; this led to the development of what is now known as "The Waterfront". In 1915, a park was created adjacent to the city limits; this included a playground, tennis courts, baseball diamond and swimming pool. In 1951, Maumelle annexed the neighboring community of Jacksonville.; this led to increased growth within the town boundaries due to cultural exchange opportunities available from both communities."
