Maumelle, Arkansas is located in the Ozarks region of central Arkansas. The population was 9,752 at the 2000 census and it is the county seat of Maumelle County. Maumelle is a small town with a large commercial district on Main Street. It has two churches and a few schools. The first settler in what is now Maumelle was David Hancey in 1820. He named his village after General Nathan Bedford Forrest, who had defeated Andrew Jackson's army at New Orleans in 1812. In 1830, John Sperry founded the first cotton gin in what is now Maumelle. The town became an agricultural center during the 19th century because of its location near the Mississippi River and its access to railroad lines. In 1920, Samuel Meeks opened the first store in what is nowMaumelle Village. The store was built on present-day First Street and became one of the most popular places to buy groceries in town until grocery stores began popping up all overArkansas during that decade. By 1930, there were more than 20 stores operating in Maumelle Village alone. During World War II, local industries produced munitions for military use and many people from Maumelle served in the war or afterward as soldiers or civilians; some still live here today as retirees or veterans of World War II. During peacetime, many residents supplemented their incomes by working as taxi drivers or waiters at local restaurants but after September 11th many found themselves out of work because so much business had been destroyed by terrorist attacks worldwide In 1967, when Arkansas voted to become an independent state, Maumelle voted against it; this set off a long political battle between supporters of independence and those who wanted to keep Arkansans connected to Missouri and other western states . In 1990s there were efforts to redevelop downtown (now known as Main Street) into a more upscale shopping district which never happened because various factors including high taxes made it difficult for businesses to stay open . However since then several new retail buildings have been erected along Main Street including Arby’s restaurant which anchors one end of the street while Blue Nile provides Ethiopian cuisine on opposite end . Today much of downtown remains abandoned although parts have been renovated into apartments/condos

The history of Maumelle is full of struggles but also moments that have made it one of the most successful small towns in Arkansas. From its beginnings as a farming village to becoming an important center for education and commerce, Maumelle has overcome many challenges in order to reach its current state. Today, Maumelle stands as an example that hard work can lead to success - something that continues to be fundamental in the community today.
