In 1924 an increase to maumailles population led to its annexation into Rahway Township adjoining Memphis, Tennessee; this annexation resulted from a lawsuit brought against Rahway Township by residents of Memphis who alleged that its incorporation violated township zoning regulations prohibiting annexations without prior approval from all members of the township board including Mayor Haggerty whose home lay withinRahway's boundaries

In 1839, Maumelle became the capital of Arkansas. That year, President James K. Polk issued a proclamation naming Maumelle the state's new capital. The town continued to grow and by 1860 had an population of over 10,000 people. In 1865, Maumelle became the capital of Confederate Arkansas following its victory in the Battle of Magnolia Bridge. The city declined during Reconstruction but regained much of its former glory after the end of World War II as a center for industry and commerce.
