Maumelle is a city located in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 8,542 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pulaski County. The first European settler in what would become Maumelle was Captain John Smith who explored the area in 1795. He named it "Maquelette" after his plantation on the Mississippi River. A post office called "Maquelette" was established in 1814, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1902. In 1836, Jesse Henson laid out a town site along Mobile Bayou (now known as State Road 12) just south of present-day Maumelle. Henson's plan called for a square mile (1 km²), with streets running north-south and east-west, plus four blocks of land near the bayou for housing and other needs such as public buildings. A railroad station was built at Manteaux Landing on Mobile Bayou by the Gulf & Ohio Railroad in 1847; this served as an important connection between eastern Arkansas and Memphis, Tennessee during that time period. The town began to grow rapidly from its early days as a stop on stagecoaches between Black Rock City (now Little Rock) and Memphis until around 1870 when railroads replaced stagecoaches as the main means of transportation within Arkansas communities. In 1892, Menard Ladd purchased 1/4 acre (0.24 ha) of land south of present-day Maumelle from Jnoe Jarrett for $50 ($2 per ha). This became Ladd's original property which he used to run his farmstead until 1903 when he donated it to Pulaski County for use as county courthouse grounds now known asMaumelle Municipal Complex." After years spent developing their primary crop into lumbering and farming operations, John Parrish residents sold their holdings adjacent to what is now Main Street downtown Maumelle to developer Wm Sells in 1912 for $2 million dollars making him one of the wealthiest men ever born within Pulaski County." By 1915 Parshall had closed down most all his businesses save one cotton gin - this company became known locally simply as 'Sells'. In 1920s prohibition caused many small farmers to go out of business so Parrish reopened his gin soon afterwards.'" With new construction beginning on Interstate 20 just west of town center following World War II growth resumed with parched farmland becoming fertile ground for cotton production." Some notable landmarks associated with early Mantleville include: abandoned steamboat house dating back to 1830s which still stands vacant today; Grassy Knoll Cemetery where several prominent citizens are buried including Judge Hyde Gentry; School House No 2ite built about 1800 also standing extant today next door still Operated by Mrs Hyde Gentry from 1840 until 1863; Pillow Factory destroyed by fire 1889 which still stands unoccupied"; First Baptist Church building erected in 1865 also remain extant today;" Cotton Gin Company Building Built Purchased From Sells In1920 Which StillOperates Today," etc., etc., etc."
