Maumelle, Arkansas is a town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 5,871 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Pulaski County and the county seat of Pulaski County. Maumelle was founded by Daniel Boone on November 3, 1785 as a station on the road from Independence to St. Louis. The first store in Maumelle opened in 1823. The present-day city of Maumelle was founded by John Fenton on January 1, 1907 as part of a settlement along the Arkansas River which was then known as Indian Territory. In 1912 it became an incorporated municipality with a population of 10,000 people and has since grown to over 20,000 residents. The city hall and many other buildings were built during World War II when the local military service caused many businesses and citizens to build material for war production; however most of these structures have been destroyed or are now unoccupied because they no longer serve their original purpose. On September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks occurred near Maumelle; four American Airlines planes were crashed into two towers within minutes of each other outside Memphis, Tennessee killing all 151 passengers and five crew members on board those planes; although only one plane striking downtown Memphis had any fatalities (the pilot ejected safely). Many people living close to Ground Zero reported feeling fear or terror before or after the attacks happened; this included locals who lived within one kilometer (less than half a mile) of either tower collapse zone according to research done by both FEMA and New York City's FDNY investigators following 9/11 tragedy sites around New York City specifically targeting skyscrapers near Times Square that could be seen from ground zero (this included such nearby skyscrapers as One World Trade Center). Maumelle is a city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 16,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pulaski County. Maumelle was founded by French-Canadian settlers in 1851. The first post office in Maumelle was established on October 10, 1851, and named for Jean-Baptiste Maumelle. In 1865, the town became a consolidated community and was renamed Mummelle after Capt. (then Mayor) Gaspard de Mummelle of the French forces who had fought against Spanish forces during the Mexican–American War. The first school in Maumelle opened on October 10, 1851 as part of a larger school district which included Ozark City and two other townships: White Sands and West Fork. There were no buildings or students until1864 when Drury Hall School opened with 11 students and 2 teachers; it would grow to be one of the largest schools in Arkansas with over 200 students by 1907. It wasn't until 1861 thatMaumelle got its own railroad station which served as an important transportation hub for goods moving between Ozark City and nearby white settlements like Decatur and Pine Bluff along the Soil road corridor across central Arkansas; this helped to spur development within the township including some impressive architecture built specifically for rail transportation including Stroudsburg Railroad Station (now Amtrak's Decatur Passenger Terminal) later known as Searcy House inside what is now Searcy Plaza shopping center north of Interstate 20 east of downtown Maumelle – becoming one of only a handful cities nationally to have both passenger train service AND significant commercial infrastructure oriented around it! In 1906 local banker Jules Dufresne donated land east of downtown for what would become Prairie View A&M University; this major expansion not only created more jobs but also allowed for much needed housing developments adjacent to campus including Winters Chapel Village today’s Old Main Campus building visible from I-20 just south of Highway 57 intersection near FM 965/Upper Cumberland Road outside present day downtown Maumelle – giving rise to present day university’s nickname "Prairie View" statewide! In 1941 Peabody Coal Company started production northwest of town northeast off US 71Drew Barry (later Drew Barrymore Boulevard) became home to one million tons per annum by 1962 making it one of ARKansas' primary coal mining districts - operations ceased some time prior to that but remains a reminder still locals visit every year during National Coal Mining Museum open seasonally starting November 15th thru April 5th
