The Maumelle Rifle and Pistol Company was organized on November 10, 1907. The company was named for the town of Maumelle, Arkansas. It was started by George H. Smith and James Fenton with two rifles and four pistols. The first order of business for the company was to buy a rifle from Poultney Arsenal in Illinois. They then went out to hunt game in the area around Maumelle. The company quickly became known as one of the best hunting organizations in Arkansas. In 1911, the company purchased three more rifles from Poultney Arsenal and continued to increase their hunting activity throughoutArkansas. In 1912, they built a shooting range near their home in Maumelle and commenced using it extensively during hunting season. In 1913, they bought six more guns from Poultney Arsenal and continued to use them for hunting purposes throughoutArkansas as well as Louisiana and Texas where they also hunted deer and hogs. On July 7, 1916, George H Smith died at the age of 71 years old from a gunshot wound he suffered while hunting deer at his farm outside of Arkadelphia, Arkansas. James Fenton succeeded him as president of the company effective that date; however James resigned due to health reasons later that year after only eight months into his term when he developed an illness which required hospitalization; he would not return to work until January 1917 when he finally recovered sufficiently enough to resume presidency effective February 1st
Maumelle is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 3,898 at the 2010 census. Maumelle is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Odem area. The first settler in what would become Maumelle was J.C. Hennessey in 1872. He and his wife, Sarah Jane (1848-1927), founded a log cabin on the site that became known as "Hennessey's Cabin". By 1882, 5 settlers had moved to the area and started a gristmill which operated until 1925. A post office called "Maumelle" was established in 1892, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1957. In 1907, one of the founders of Maumelle, Burt Witherspoon (1868-1937), patented an invention entitled "The Witherspoon shock absorber", which he marketed as a safer alternative to tamping iron on rock foundation slopes for homebuilders and other construction enthusiasts. The claim to invention was later proven false by another inventor who developed an identical product two years later. This early history can be found at local historical museum located within walking distance of downtown Maumelle proper; however most information available about this period comes from oral histories gathered over time by residents or their descendants living nearby during that eraMany tell stories of how their grandparents or other relatives would go out into the countryside after work finished for dinner to check out some new development just down the road – often spotting an old farmhouse being used as storage or occasional services being offered inside – only to come back with news that not only were all those occupants killed when a tornado struck overnight while they were away on vacation but also all those buildings had been abandoned since then! Maumelle was founded in 1836 by the French Catholic missionaries, Father André and Sister Marie-Madeleine. The town became a center of religious activity for many years and remains so today. In 1855, Maumelle was named after Maureen (the Blessed Virgin). The name is derived from the French word "maurer" which means to make bricks. Reverend John A. Macdonald, an American Methodist minister who served in Arkansas during the early 1800s, arrived in Maumelle in 1852 and made it his home. He built a chapel there that still stands today. The first store opened in Maumelle on May 7, 1856. It was called the Merchants Store and operated for about a year before being shut down by irate customers because of high prices for goods sold there. In 1865, Rev. James Manton came to Maumelle from Little Rock to preach the gospel here and soon started construction on what would become First Baptist church on College Avenue. Construction began on this building on December 12th of that year and it opened its doors to worshipers on January 3rd, 1865. A new school was also constructed at this time – Stroud School – which helped fuel growth throughout central Arkansas during the late 19th century as students increasingly traveled to education opportunities elsewhere in search of better lives or moneyly opportunities than they could find back home. The enrollment at Stroud increased from just 10 students in 1860 to more than 100 by 1870; however, due to financial limitations Stroud closed its doors again within two years of opening due largely to lack of appropriations from local authorities along with competition from other schools around town which had been established with greater success thanks to government investment.. In 1873 Second Baptist Church replaced Stroud as the primary Protestant congregation in town after Reverend Jno Hopkinson’s arrival from Missouri with his sawmill across the street from First Baptist Church having failed when he moved into business alone with no capital resources available other than some personal loan he obtained through friends.. By 1888 ownership of both churches had passed through various changes hands several times until finally becoming outrightowned by Dwight Dillard who donated themBoth churches were nationalized under United States Federal control following World War II when much larger congregations were urgently needed near military installations all over America as war effort escalated Maumelle has seen more recent development including homes being built along Main Street since 1990 while downtown Magnolia undergone restoration beginning in 2006 which culminated in an open house event held November 15th 2007
Maumelle was founded in 1871 by Methodists, and became a town after being made a post office in 1873. The first store in Maumelle opened in 1875.
