Maumelle, Arkansas is located in the Ozarks of central Arkansas. The population was 9,692 at the 2010 census. The city is named for Maumelle, Alabama, a small town in southern Pulaski County that had been founded by white settlers in 1836. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Arkansas was made by Kit Carson and his party of six men on November 15, 1837, when they left from Fort Smith to explore what became known as the Indian Territory. They traveled northwest along the Arkansas River until reaching the headwaters of the Little Rock River. There they built a log cabin and fished for walleye and catfish until forced out of their territory by General Thomas J. Gibson's army under John Crain during the Mexican-American War. In 1838, John Sibley founded an agricultural colony at Poudre Lake near present-day Maumelle with overlapping land grants from President James K. Polk and Senator Andrew Johnson. Seldom called upon to carry out military campaigns or provide garrison duty during Polk's two terms as president (1849–53), Sibley spent much time developing his new community into a thriving center of cotton production and commerce within one hundred miles of Washington D.C.. Settlers arrived throughout 1839: By early 1840 there were 1,500 people living in eighty homes scattered around four square miles on rolling hills above Poudre Lake; most were farmers who raised corn, wheat, hogs, cattle and horses; some mined coal nearby while others manufactured potteryware from local clay resources and fashioned saddles from buffalo hide imported from Texas; some engaged in fishing for mullet,, snapperand bass off Poudre Lake’s edge; also important was trade with settlers living near Fort Smith which included goods bought or sold at auctioneer’s meetings staged at various locations along I-40 between Arkansaw Boulevard west of downtown Maumelle A post office was established at Poudre Lake on May 2nd 1840 by Arent Van Buren after he took office as governor of Missouri on December 6th that year following Francis Moultrie’s resignation over irregularities surrounding the selection of Ulysses S. Grant as Secretary of War over Salmon Pomeroy because Van Buren felt Gorton would be more likely to promote Agriculture rather than Commerce Ponderosa Lumber Company began business operations northwest of town on October 16th 1841 when Wm Henterick sent two trucksloadings worth $5 per ton downriver to load lumber onto boats going upriver for shipment to St Louis Maumelle became animportant commercial center due to its location midway between Washington D.C./St Louis/Kansas City area dotted with warehouses storing everything from flourishes such as salt pork to parts related to railroad construction including track gauges In addition fur traders active in this region acquired large quantities ot Indian moccasin deer hides making this area one significant sourceof income until well after Oklahomahood through 1860s antipathies towards Indians no doubt resultingfrom large numbers easterners settling hereabouts

In 1839, the town of Maumelle was founded by Arkansas General James W. Moore in what is now Wilkinson County, Arkansas. The town was named after General John C. Maumelle, who fought in the Mexican–American War and also served as a United States Congressman from Fort Smith,Arkansas. In 1881, Maumelle became a city when it was combined with nearby Pine Bluff. The city's original downtown district still stands today and is home to many of the city's historical buildings including the Old Courthouse and City Hall. The population of Maumelle increased rapidly during the late 19th century due to its location on the railroad and natural resources around it. Cotton production began to decline in the early 21st century, however, which led to a decrease in population growth throughout much of Arkansas over that period. Today,Maumelle remains an important agricultural center with a small but growing population of retirees and young adults who commute into larger cities for work or pleasure purposes.
