Maumelle is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pulaski County. The name Maumelle may be derived from the Choctaw word "Muumal" meaning "place where water meets land". The first European to visit Maumelle was Lieutenant Colonel John C. Wright on September 16, 1814 during his military mission to scout out a route for an Arkansas and Texas Railroad. He named the settlement after his friend and mentor, General James Moultrie of Georgia. In 1834, David Waddell surveyed and platted what is now Maumelle Township with a grant of 4 miles (6 km) on each side of theArkansas River to Auguste Chouteau. By 1840, some local farmers had bought land in excess of their allotment and began trading goods with settlers in Missouri for cotton ginned cotton that they then shipped downriver to Memphis for export. As early as 1845, there were two Methodist churches in Maumelle; one erected by Revs.. Abel Barnes and Isaac Goodloe in 1844-1845 and another by Revs.. JnoDiphile Bushnell and Phebe Goodloe in 1850-1851. A post office called Maycomb was established at this location on October 3, 1856; it closed on December 15th., 1957 due to lack of mail traffic from the town center (mail service arrived from nearby Little Rock less than a week later). In 1861 citizens of neighboring Jonesboro applied for incorporation under the name Pulaski County but were denied because their township did not include all of present-day Pulaski County including Maumelle which lay within Howard County (later renamed Arkansason County). On November 12th., 1861 voters approved a resolution authorizing Governor Andrew Johnson to annex portions of Arkansason into Louisiana Territory so that Arkansas could become part of newly created America – making Maumelle part Of! This event marked perhaps the most significant change ever brought about within southeastern Arkansas as slavery gradually gave way To Free Labor! After successful elections held November 24th., 1861 resulting in reelection Of Gov’t Officers And Political Representatives From The Township/County I believe That We Can Now Look Forward To An Improved Future At Our Place… Thank You For Your Consideration! On January 1st., 1865 Confederate Major General Jubal Early attacked Fort Sumter with 1007 men without warning or provocation causing mass panic among Union militia who responded with totalromptu gunfire which destroyed many buildings including our Masonic Temple & Church Completed In 1865 With A Donation By His Majestys Most Noble Favorite Son Confederate Major General Robert E Lee This event forever changed our town & village as we knew It & Myselfretta Did Not Want Any Part In What Was Happening Here So I Considered myself lucky When The opportunity arose To Come Back Home

Maumelle is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,719 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Hittsboro, AR Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Maumelle were the Hensleigh family who arrived in 1871. They were two brothers and their father from England. The land where Maumelle stands was granted to them by the General Land Office on June 6, 1881. In 1905, the Maumelle-Arkansas Railroad was built through town and began passenger service between Maumelle and Arkadelphia. Passenger service ended on May 30, 1966 due to trackage rights issues with the Arkansas State Railroad Company which also owned the line. The first post office in Maumelle was established on December 12, 1886; it closed on February 14, 1895 because of postal reform which mademapline delivery possible by mail instead of having packages delivered to local residences as required before then. A store opened in 1912 called "The Gilded Cage" which prospered until 1914 when it burned down and reopened as "Bella's Bargain Store". A three story brick building known as "The Lion's Den" housed a grocery store from 1916 until 1927 when it burned down again and reopened as "Dorothy's Drug Store".It served as a schoolhouse from 1923 until 1951 when it burned down again and reopened as "Maumelle High School". It currently houses a gas station/convenience store known as "Crazy Mike's."
Maumelle was founded in 1872 by the Maumelle Indian community. It became a city in 1907 and is the county seat of Little Rock County. The city is home to the University of Arkansas at Monticello, which was established in 1912.
