Maumelle is a city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 5,939 at the 2010 census. It is the second largest city in Pulaski County and the county seat of Maumelle. The town was founded in 1867 by General James Hance and named for his wife, Mary McNair Hance. In 1872, it became an incorporated municipality under the name of Maumelle after Anna May Alcorn's death at age 10 months when her mother took her to live with her sister in that town. It had a population of 1,500 in 1880 and 2,000 in 1890 before becoming a local government again with 3,500 residents by 1906. The post office was renamed Maumelle on May 6th of that year following the installation of mail service from Little Rock through Memphis to Maumelle. In 1909 it lost its charter as a municipality but regained it as part of an annexation process by neighboring Lonoke which then became known as Bentonville. By 1914 it had reached its present size with 4,000 residents; within two decades it would reach its peak with 10,000 residents according to the 1920 census due largely to World War I military production brought about by nearby oil wells being drilled there: during this time also many new businesses were established including one engineering firm which remains extant today as well as several churches and other businesses located around what is now First Baptist Church (built 1907). As recently as 1940 only 400 people lived there; however during World War II[1] much growth occurred due to both war output (raided houses were turned into barracks) and immigration (Arkansas citizens enlisted in various branches of the armed forces moving their families to Arkansas).[2] The population peaked at 25,000 in 1960 before declining slightly until reaching 21,300 by 1980; however since 2000 rapid progress has been made thanks primarily to successive waves (yet small numbers) of immigrants who have arrived based on invitation or opportunity from locals – many coming directly from countries such as China and Africa.[3] As recently as 1970 less than half of all students attending public schools came from within Pulaski County; however since then school districts throughout Pulaski County have received grants/ subsidies from state government so that all students attending public schools are currently required to attend either Central High School or Northwest Middle School regardless of family income.[4] With more than $200 million invested over 20 years,[5][6][7][8]["maumelle" comes from French meaning "fortress"] downtown redevelopment having begun complete [9][10], major league baseball team plans announced – see below – mixed use development proposed for riverfront area adjacent park etc., recent reports indicate significant job growth etc.: overall things are going pretty good!
