The town was named for his wife, Marie-Josephine (née Henderson), and their daughter, Maumelle. By 1915, the population of Maumelle had grown to 597 residents and it ballooned when the railroad came through in 1911. The population peaked at 1,725 in 1930 before declines followed during World War II and the Korean War. The population has declined since then and currently stands at 711 residents. The history of Maumelle is reflective of that of many small towns across Arkansas during this time period: It was founded on shaky ground by people who were looking for a way out of their troubles; it grew rapidly with no guarantees of permanence; and it saw its share of prosperity and decline before eventually reaching its current status.
