In the early 1800s, a small town in southwestern Arkansas, Maumelle, had a population of just over 100 residents. The town was located on the eastern bank of the Arkansas River and was known for its fertile soil and abundance of timber. In 1836, Maumelle became the capital of what would become Arkansas Territory. It was during this time that firearms began to be used in law enforcement and local self-defense. The first firearm t-shirt developed in Maumelle may have been made by Purdy & Brown (now known as American Apparel) in 1892. This shirt featured an image of a revolver with the inscription "To use or not to use - that is the question". The shirt became popular among locals who wanted to show support for gun rights.
