Maumelle, Arkansas is located in the eastern United States and is part of the Arkansas Valley. The population was 6,521 as of the 2000 census. It is a small town in Pulaski County, with a population density of only 152 people per square mile (60/km²). The name " Maumelle" comes from French meaning "place where there are onions." The first settler in what is now Maumelle was J.B. Hennessey on January 24, 1872. He founded a farm named Hennessey and Hennessey and Company at this location. This company later merged with another to form the present day Hennesey-Reed Company which still operates today as one of the largest agricultural businesses in America. In 1907, Mrs. Robert Ewing donated land for a high school which would serve Maumelle and neighboring towns until it moved to its present site in 1952. Mrs. Ewing also donated $10,000 towards building a new high school that would replace the old one which had been destroyed by fire in 1951

Maumelle was a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States until the early 20th century. The population of Maumelle at the time of its incorporation as a city in 1907 was 2,611. It declined rapidly during the 1920s and 1930s due to agricultural Depression-related factors and World War II military installations. In 1949, it became a city again following an act of the Arkansas General Assembly. It has since seen modest growth, with a current population of about 8,000. The first permanent settler in what is now Maumelle was John Wesley Powell in 1868. Powell's father had come from Lancaster County in Pennsylvania around 1834 and homesteaded land near present-day Maumelle on July 10, 1868. The name "Maumelle" (meaning "hollow") was given to him by his brother David McKay who also settled there that year. David McKay's daughter Fannie married Owen Jarrell who acquired some additional land in 1870 and named it Mound City after his home county of Mound City, Iowa (now Des Moines). A post office called Mound City was established at this location on December 17, 1870; it served until January 3, 1893 when it was changed to Maumelle & District post office under direction of Colonel Edwin Hanks USMA Commanding Officer for the Department Of Indian Affairs stationed at Fort Smith (later known as Bentonville). On September 9, 1899 mail arrived at Mound City from Stuttgart Texas via wagon train led by George Washington Carver In 1902 James Rector organized a grocery store & general mercantile interests here which later became one of downtown Maumelle's mainstay businesses until that store closed in 1984 A Masonic lodge operated here from 1865 through 1923 with Lodge #547 being chartered on November 6th 1865 The first schools were opened in 1906 when Mrs Dormer Cockerill Elementary School and Mrs Emmons Middle School were built; both schools closed circa 1951 For many yearsMaumelle had its own water system but this stopped functioning about 1965
The town of Maumelle was founded in 1836 by the couple James and Sarah Goodloe. The Goodloe family ran a small grocery store in the town until around 1840. They then built a home on the corner of Fourth and Main Streets, which served as their business headquarters for many years. In 1856, the Goodloe family moved to Illinois, but children from Maumelle continued to live there until about 1865. In 1885, James Goodloe died and his wifeSarah took over ownership of the grocery store. She continued to run it until it closed in 1907. The building still stands today, and is used as a museum today.
