Ammunition history in Maumelle, Arkansas began with the first shot fired from a rifle at Fort Smith in 1814. The fort was built on the confluence of the Little Arkansas and White Rivers. It was an important military post during the Mexican-American War and part of the Texas Rangers force that fought against Mexican forces. In 1875, Maumelle became an incorporated town after being voted on by its citizens. Ammunition manufacturing began in Maumelle in 1898 when two local men, Wm. Gentry and J.B. Dickey, founded Dickey rifles company which produced firearms and ammunition until 1976. The town was also home to FN Herstal arms plant from 1907-1910 which manufactured pistols and rifles for export to Europe before closing down due to World War I production interruption. The town was named for General James M. Maumelle, an American general who served in the Mexican-American War and as Commanding Officer of Fort Smith during the Reconstruction Era. The first settler in Maumelle was David Hogg from Tennessee who arrived on horseback on November 6, 1839. One of his descendants, Judge John Fenton Hogg IX (1847–1915), established a legal practice in Maumelle that continues to this day. In 1881, A&P grocery store proprietor J.C. Beasley donated land to build a shopping center which included a school and post office building; the firstMaumelle High School operated from 1918 until 1969 when it became Damen Middle School In 1924, Orson Scott Cardwell built what is now known as the Pagoda House as his home and summer residence while he served as Governor of Arkansas. He later sold it and moved into what is now known as Pinnacle Tower which overlooks downtown Maumelle On October 1st 1903 three men (George Witherspoon, Hiram Goudreau and Harry Jenkins) started construction of First National Bank with $5 each Maumelle's only doctor until 1935 was Dr JB Fenton who provided medical care for locals until he retired after 54 years service Dr Fenton's son-in-law Dr Ernest Ladd also practiced medicine here before moving to Memphis where he started his own practice In 1935 Dr JB Fenton died suddenly leaving behind two daughters (Hester Elizabeth "Betty" Fenton née Webb and Nellie Frances(née Maher)) to take over his practice The Post Office opened its doors on November 25th 1936 by Mrs Bessie Kinghorn with 3 mailbags per week delivery along with one package per monthmail service .Mrs Kinghorn continued operation until May 15th 1945 when her husband changed streets name from Main Street to University Avenue due to lack of available space on Main Street . Mrs Kinghorn then passed away leaving Betty & Nellie (Fenton) to operate their business together for another 38 years before it closed down on July 25th 1957 .During that time they processed over 350 million letters including 150% more than any other local post office .When Betty & Nellie closedtered their business they left behind an inventoryof over 400 items including many rare or historical documents such as “Cherokee Treatise On Cotton” by Andrew Jackson signed , “Arkansas Constitution Of 1912” by Jefferson Davis signature etc which are still being exhibited today at the Arkadelphia History Museum
In 1871, a group of Mormons who had been moved to Arkansas from Illinois decided to establish a community in what is now Maumelle. The group purchased 640 acres of land and began construction on the Utah Temple. On July 6, 1872, they laid the cornerstone of the temple and soon after organized their new town into a village. In 1880, the LDS Church purchased an additional 1,200 acres in what is now downtown Maumelle. This land became known as "The Promised Land." The first principal was James E. Faust Jr., son of James E. Faust Sr., who served as mayor from 1922 to 1928 and 1929 to 1933.
