Maumelle, Arkansas is a town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,876 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock– Summit City Micropolitan Statistical Area. Maumelle's name comes from the French word "majeur" meaning "bigger". The first Europeans to visit what is now Pulaski County were French traders and explorers in 1680-1685. They named the area after a small village on the Mississippi River where they had been trading goods with Native Americans for centuries. In 1795, General Andrew Jackson's army passed through this area during his march from Memphis to Tupelo, Mississippi. A group of white settlers known as the Mississippians who remained behind founded what is now Maumelle in 1834. The first store opened in 1835 and by 1840 there were three stores and a schoolhouse in the community. In 1851 a post office called Maumelle was established; it remained in operation until 1907. The population of Maumelle grew rapidly during World War II due to local production of military munitions; by 1945 it had reached 2,500 residents. After the war, many jobs left town as people moved into rural areas or away from hard working towns because of new technologies such as television and automobiles which made life easier and cheaper than before. Today most residents are farmers or ranchers who also use their land for grazing animals or crop farming; some have also built homes around their acreage since 2000 when zoning laws changed which allowed more development within town limits without giving away any rights to owners opposite of developers creating evergreen subdivisions between streets that are one block wide along avenues that converge at one intersection serving both educational institutions (a high school/middle school), service businesses (a few convenience stores) and weekend living destinations like golf courses and RV parks with lakefront access while still keeping much open space remaining close to those who live near schools etc.. There are still several churches located throughout town but services have shifted towards secular services like baptisms, marriages etc... while churches have seen fewer memberships over time they continue providing social support activities among their congregations through food pantries/food banks/orphans houses...
