The name Marion comes from the Hardin-Baylor Purchase which was made in 1819 by General James K. Polk and his brother Andrew A. Polk during the Mexican War. The town was started on November 12, 1882 when a group of men from Hannibal, Missouri set out to found a trading post and build a store in what is now Marion. They named their new settlement after Major General George Armstrong Custer who had died in battle two years earlier while leading an American cavalry unit against Native Americans near Prestonville, Indiana (). The first school in Marion opened its doors on December 6, 1882. In 1886, the first railway arrived in Marion and quickly became one of the most important factors in the growth of this community. By 1898, there were six businesses operating in Marion with over $10,000 worth of goods being transported each month! The railroad continued to grow and by 1955 there were thirteen businesses with more than $100,000 worth of goods transported! In 1950, Morris Moseley announced he would run for president as an independent candidate against incumbent Dwight D Eisenhower unsuccessfully%. After three unsuccessful attempts at running for office (including twice winning Pulaski County’s highest office - mayor and state senator), Moseley finally won election as sheriff of Pulaski County on November 3rd,. With his victory came increased opportunities to start his own business and make decisions that affected all aspects of life within the small town he had called home for many years! Today, Marion continues to be one of the most vibrant communities in rural America due to its close proximity to major metropolitan areas such as Little Rock or Memphis!

Marion is a small town in central Arkansas, located on the edge of the Ozark Mountains. The population was 706 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Conyers, AR Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town first settled by farmers in 1871. By 1910, Marion had a store and two churches. The post office opened in 1914 and continued to serve until it closed in 1971. The first school was built in 1916 and served grades one through four. In 1925, a new high school was built and serves grades five through eight today. In 1944, during World War II, Marion joined the United StatesArmy as part of the Arkansas National Guard and became an artillery battalion for I Corps under General Dwight D Eisenhower's command. After the war ended, Marion again joined the local community; however, its role decreased with the opening of Little Rock High School in 1951 which replaced Marion's original schools. In 1966, when Little Rock became an independent city, Marion Joined that city as well along with Rogersville and Purdy to create North Little Rock–Conyers Combined Statistical Area (CSA). However due to budget cuts within CSA officials decided not to add Marion to that area after finding no active businesses there or potential annexation opportunities from other cities within CSA which would have increased their populations by similar amounts combined
Marion was founded in 1827 by Wiley and Anna Marion. It became a town in 1876, and it was named for General Marion who fought in the American Revolution. The city was incorporated on May 9, 1886.
