Marion, Arkansas is a town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Conway Metropolitan Statistical Area. The small town is home to both public and private schools as well as a few churches and businesses. Marion was founded in 1881 by white settlers who named it for General James Wilkinson Marion commanding the Union Army during the American Civil War. The first post office in Marion was established in 1882. Marion, Arkansas is a town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pulaski County and was formed from parts of neighboring Union County. The name Marion comes from French-Canadian explorer Robert de La Salle's expedition in 1682 and his landing here on July 4 of that year. This place had been occupied by Creek Indians for centuries before that. In 1827, four years after Arkansas Territory was organized as a state, general James Hogg sent an expedition to take possession of this territory. The first white man to enter Marion was J.F. Smith in 1828; he surveyed what would become the town site and built a cabin thereon about 1829 or 1830. The first store opened in Marion on December 12, 1830 by John Garner; it operated until around 1840 when it burned down due to bad weather conditions and no one could find insurance for the fire department to extinguish it! A post office called Marion was established at this location on October 25, 1861; it served until May 5, 1865 when it closed due to postal reform which eliminated post offices in rural areas statewide! On January 7th 1905 the townsite of Unionville (now part of Little Rock) were added to Marion as part of a road construction project authorized by President Theodore Roosevelt pursuant to Executive Order No. 6102 dated November 26th 1904! Marions Historic District boundaries have continued unchanged since then! On September 15th 2006 voters approved annexing parcels located east/southeast of the original town limits (the present day North Little Rock neighborhood) making Marion even more centrally located within Pulaski County! Marion has undergone many changes over time with its economy shifting from agriculture into Manufacturing during prohibition times and onto professional services during recent decades while still retaining some elements associated with its pioneer days like large hand mills & gristmills along with several small businesses including two banks & several telephones!. Nowadays most residents are employed within proximity or surrounding industries such as healthcare/government contracting etc., but also maintain their independent spirit thanks to strong support systems like civic organizations like Rotary Clubs & United Way!.
