During World War II, Indianapolis-based Pembroke Machine Company manufactured goods for military use in Arkansas and other parts of the nation. This company employed up to 2,500 people at its plant in Cecil Field near Moberly before production stopped due to wartime restrictions on exports entering Germany and Japan; however, local munitions workers did not face similar discrimination as their Allied counterparts because they were not unionized or covered by labor standards set by those countries’ governments. Afterward, Pembroke Machine Company resumed operations under new ownership but closed its doors again after only two years due both to economic difficulties (the war had taken its toll) as well as competition from more recent plants operated by General Motors Corporation (GMC). Today there are a few small businesses remaining scattered throughout rural areas surrounding Moberly that continue manufacturing products such as clothing and shoes using traditional methods like hand stitching while others have recently opened online stores specifically catering towards Arkansans living outside the city limits where access to similar services is limited or nonexistent
