The early history of Marion, Arkansas is obscure, but it is likely that the town was founded in the 1800s by white settlers. The first European to live in what is now Marion was Captain John Smith, who landed on the present-day shore of the Mississippi River in 1776. He and his family were the first white people to set foot in what is now Marion County. By 1810, there were 25 residents living in what is now Marion. In 1819, a post office opened at Marion and operated for 10 years. In 1825, Confederate General Robert E. Lee led an attack on Union forces at Fort Sumter, which resulted in three deaths and many injuries among Confederate soldiers; this event helped bring about Reconstruction in America and made Marion a part of the new Confederacy. In 1881, when Arkansas became a state under Kansas Territory laws, much of central Arkansas was included within the newly created Jefferson County; this area included much of present-day Marion County. The county seat moved from Bentonville to Jonesboro in 1886; however, due to western Oklahoma’s annexation into Mexico following World War II (which changed its borders), only 3% of eastern Jefferson County remained within Arkansas boundaries when it became a part ofNew Mexico. As a result, most of eastern Jefferson County became part of New Mexico until 1961 when it reverted back to Arkansas as well as all but 1/4 mile of western Cherokee County which lay within Indian Territory at that time. In 1929–30, $7 million was spent on improving highways acrossArkansas from Little Rock northward; this project ultimately failed because no one wanted to move out eastward into Indian Territory where there were few services or businesses available aside from liquor stores run by Indians themselves (the opening up of these areas also led to increased crime). However, some development has taken place over the past decade around downtown Jonesboro with plans for more housing developments and retail outlets being developed eastward along Interstate 40A near US 70 and State Route 64 while still keeping access to major city amenities such as movie theaters and restaurants westward along I-40A near Interstate 15 junction with US 66).
In 1819, Marion was platted as a town and named in honor of General James Wilkinson, who had fought in the Mexican-American War. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Arkansas River and its access to transportation including steamboats and canals. In 1848, the United States acquiredOregon Territory from Mexico and Marion became part of the new territory. In 1852, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed an executive order creating the Federal Reserve System; this led to increased business opportunities for Marion because it became one of the first towns in America to be included in the system. By 1907, Marion had reached its peak population with over 5,000 residents. However, during World War I, major floods destroyed most of the town's buildings which caused a significant loss of economic activity. In 1930, a new courthouse was built and renamed in honor of Judge John Hodge Sr.; however, due to budgetary problems, this building was not finished until after his death in 1951. Since then, Marion has seen periodic growth but also some decline; today it has around 1,500 residents. The economy is largely based on tourism now although there are some small businesses activities as well.
