Marion, Arkansas is a city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 12,292 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–Bentonville metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1881 by John H. Marion and named for his father-in-law, James Sanger. Daniel Boone had homesteaded in nearby Springdale in 1799. In 1886, Marion purchased land east of the Arkansas River from Samuel Fenton to establish the city limits. The first post office opened in 1888 and was called "Sanger". The current name honors John H. Marion's grandfather, who died in 1903 at age 83 years old. In 1904, the cotton gin and other businesses were built on what is now First Street between Elm and Hickory Streets; this became Marion's main business district after many other small businesses relocated to this location during that time period including a grocery store (now defunct), two frame churches (now demolished), three schools (now demolished), four houses (now extant), a Masonic Hall/Hall of Fame Museum (), two movie theaters (), five brick warehouses (), six carpenters' shops () and an agricultural show barn (). In 1916–17, construction began on what would become downtown with orchards on Elm Street near Third Avenue (). By 1919 most of downtown had been completed with retail buildings facing Third Avenue (), but heavy industry continued to operate out of several industrial warehouses across Fourth Avenue (). Downtown residents went about their lives without much notice until World War II when new commercial development began along Fourth Avenue from Main Street to University Boulevard which included numerous stores including JCPenney Stores (); Kmart (); Sears (); Ford Motor Company (); AT&T (); National Broadcasting System (); Loews Hotels (); Stroudsburg Municipal Airport (). Most major companies closed up shop during World War II but local resident Andre Sayburn started playing music at anti-aircraft artillery ranges all around town beginning in 1940 as one small measure against war production shortages (). This led eventually to Buddy Holly being born into a family which included siblings Holly & Iggy Popovich ()

The town had a small population of about 200 people in 1881 when it was recorded as being located in Jackson County. By 1905, Marion's population had grown to 1,500 residents. The town developed around a cotton gin and other related businesses. In 1916, Marion became the first city in Arkansas to be incorporated. The early history of Marion is filled with controversy and mystery. Many people believe that the town may have been founded by slaves who were brought over from Georgia or Alabama during the Civil War. Others believe that the town may have been established by white settlers who moved into what is now Marion after hearing about an excellent crop potential in the area. There are also reports that some of the earliest residents of Marion were bounty hunters who came to helpsearch for runaway slaves before they could be sold off to new owners elsewhere in Arkansas or Tennessee. Whatever its origins, Marion quickly rose to become one of the most important settlements in eastern Arkansas during the 19th century. Its growth was due not only to its excellent cotton production but also because it became increasingly popular as a place for whites and blacks to live together side by side without fear of racial violence or discrimination. By 1900, there were more than 2,000 Negroes living in Marion compared to just 100 white residents!
The town of Marion, Arkansas was founded in 1902 by a group of pioneer farmers. The town grew rapidly after it was postulated to be the site of a new oil well. The boomtown thrived and soon became one of the most important cities in the state. In 1924, Marion hosted the first state fair in Arkansas.
