In 1861, when Missouri seceded from the Union, Marion became one of six counties within Arkansas Territory that also seceded as well. The county seat moved from Carthage to Marion between 1862 and 1865 because Carthage lacked a proper courthouse at that time. On July 1st 1870, a portion of eastern Randolph County (now Searcy) were added to Marion as well making it an even eight-county township with no break until 1907 when another section (northwest Randolph County) was added bringing its count total up to 10%. From 1907 until 1965 there were only three years without any changes - one year during World War II due to military relocation then two due to population growth as people migrated into central Arkansas liberalism booming across all rural areas throughoutArkansas . In 1965 there were yet more changes with two seats being added; northwestern Randolph County becoming Livingston County while northeastern Randolph County (including parts east off main street including Moberly)joining hands forming Fayetteville-Marion Counties creating what is now Boone & Crockett Counties
In Marion, Arkansas, the first post office was opened in 1881. The town name is derived from a term meaning "safe haven."
