Marion, Arkansas is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 2,534 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fayetteville–Springdale–Rogers Combined Statistical Area. The town has been known for its cotton fields and blacksmith shops since early settlement by African Americans in the 1800s. The first white settler in Marion was John Pritchard, who arrived in 1819. He built a cabin on the east side of the river and named it Pritchardstown. A Presbyterian chapel was built nearby in 1825 and remained in use until 1985 when it was destroyed by fire. In 1826-27, Reverend James Hogg led an expedition to find a new home for African Americans near present-day Fayetteville. He selected a tract of land on the west side of the river that would become Marion. In 1835-36, Colonel Nathaniel Banks organized an army to attack Mexico during the Mexican–American War. When he learned of this planned offensive against his countrymen living north ofmodern Fayetteville, Governor Orval Faubus ordered Banks to march south and occupy Marion instead. This action resulted in violence against Africans living there which continued into 1840 when Banks finally withdrew his troops from that area afterNegroes had threatened to riot if they were not given back their homes and businesses lost during those abortive raids In 1865-66 Confederate General Robert Ewell's cavalry units passed through Marion on their way southward along I-40; this event helped spur Union efforts throughout much of Arkansas to break out of Confederate control
