The first white person to live in Marion was James Naylor, who arrived there in 1827. He built a cabin on what is now Main Street. In 1865, Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest made his way through Marion on his network of secret routes known as "the Carolinas." In honor of Forrest's visit, the town erected a large granite boulder in front of its courthouse that still stands today. The town experienced some economic prosperity during the late 1800s and early 1900s due to its location near several railroad lines and mines. However, this prosperity gradually faded over time because of competition from larger towns closer to Interstate 10 and other transportation options.
