Forrest's force was able to capture some prisoners and artillery pieces before being driven back by Union forces under Brigadier General James Moulton Polk. In 1865, after the end of the American Civil War, Marion became a state of Arkansas under Reconstruction. Its black residents continued to be disenfranchised until after World War II when they finally regained their civil rights under the new Constitution of Arkansas

The first school opened in 1907 and continued to serve students until 1942 when it closed due to World War II restrictions on education opportunities for citizens of Nazi-occupied countries. Today, the only building remaining from that time is a garage used for storage by the municipality. One important event during Marion's history is the Battle of Little Rock on November 17, 1861 which resulted in a Confederate victory over Union forces led by Major General Robert Ewells at what is now Faulkner University Park near downtown Marion. This battle also marked one of few times when Native American assistance played a significant role in resolving conflict on African American soil between white settlers and African Americans living within their own communities
The area now known as Marion was first settled by Native Americans in the early 1800s. The area was part of the Arkansas Territory until it was ceded to the United States in 1821. The town of Marion was founded in 1827, and it became a full-fledged city in 1835. In 1865, Marion was named after Brigadier General John F. Marion, who fought in the American Civil War.
