Richardson, who started manufacturing percussion caps and shells in 1824. In 1828, Richardson merged with Geo. Walthall and Manufacturing Company to form the Marion Gun Works Company. This company manufactured firearms, pistols, and rifles until it closed its doors in 1912. Ammunition production continued sporadically through the 1920s and 1930s before finally going into decline during World War II due to lack of demand from the military and other reasons. After the war, there was a renewed interest in ammunition production as gun enthusiasts resumed buying rounds for their firearms. However, since ammo prices were high relative to other commodities at that time, ammunition production remains a sporadic activity today. Today, there are two small companies that still produce small arms ammunition in Marion: American Eagle Ammunition Co., Inc., which produces Winchester 73 & 94 rifle rounds; and Winchester Repeating Arms Co., which manufactures Remington 700 rifle rounds. These two firms continue to produce rounds for both handguns and shotguns according to industry standards as well as speciality bullets such as Ventura Trophy Hunting pellets (the world’s most popular hunting bullet). On November 3, 1871, Marion was organized as a town in Pulaski County by Andrew J. Palmer and James P. Smith. The population of the town was only six people that year. The first store in the town was built by Wm. Grimes and opened on May 26, 1872. By 1880, there were ten stores in Marion with a population of over 100 people. In 1896, the first school was built in the town and it operated for one year before being closed down due to lack of money. The second school was built in 1902 and it operated for three years before also closing down due to lack of money. In 1912, David Hinton bought the land that now makes up Marion and started to build a Home Economics School on it which would later become known as Arkansas State University. In 1928, Hinton donated another piece of land to make up for the loss of his earlier donation which would help make Arkansas State University an all-encompassing university campus with multiple buildings on it today
