The town of Marion was located in northwestern Arkansas, on the Arkansas River. The first white person to live in what would become Marion was Captain John White in 1819. He built a log cabin and named it after himself, which is now the civic center of the town. The first post office was established in Marion in 1827, and the first school was also established there in 1827. In 1830, a store and blacksmith shop were both founded in Marion by Captains A.B. Flournoy and Wm.Fenton. By 1840, there were 10 residents living in Marion; seven of whom were farmers and three merchants. In 1846, General Nathan Bedford Forrest destroyed most of the buildings within the town when he attacked Union forces during the Battle of Fort Smith. A year later, Flournoy re-established a store as well as a school for girls at what is now downtown Marion; this establishment served as both local government headquarters until 1956 when it became part of city hall.)
