The history of Magnolia goes back to 1903 when James H. Ballard settled near present-day Magnolia on what is now known as Cottonwood Road West. He purchased 4 acres (1 ha) of land from Willis Davenport for $5 per acre ($2 per sq ft). This location would become home to Ballard's first business: a grocery store that he opened in 1903 on Elm StreetSouthwest of town square today known as "Queen's Court." In 1907, Ballard married Jennie Ladd and they moved their store to 243 Elm Street Southwest which served as their home until they sold it to J P Merrill in 1912 for $3500 (). Merrill renamed it "Magnolia" after his wife's native country, Scotland (Magnoli). In 1916, Merrill built the first frame house in Magnolia - it still stands today - and began selling groceries from his front porch (). At this time, most people who lived around Magnolia did so either because they were farmhands or villagers who commuted between their homes located elsewhere within Pulaski County or because they worked for one of the many companies that operated along Highway 6 west of town (). Many residents also brought their families with them when they left home to live near new friends () or take up farming opportunities (). After World War I ended, many farmers returned to farming but some continued leasing property for use as stores (), restaurants (), schools (), etc.). resident John Sievers opened his own grocery store on Main Street Northeast in 1922 and soon thereafter other grocers followed suit (). By 1933 there were 11 commercial businesses operating locally including six grocery stores (), three banks (), two post office facilities (one original), two movie theaters (), one printing press (), six churches (); five primary schools (); four secondary schools (); ten service stations (); twenty-five residences ; nine miles (30 km) of expressway ; and over 2 million pounds (0.6 million kg) of cotton production () . By 1957 only two local businesses remained: J P Merrill's Grocery Store on Main Street Northeast and Sievers' Grocery Store on North Main Street (). Both stores closed by 1963 due to competition from larger supermarkets(). However, both buildings remain extant Today as functioning historical landmarks adjacent to each other on North Main Street (). In 1978 Judge Reuben Waggoner donated all furniture inside both renovated stores including four chairs from J P Merrill's building plus several items from Sievers' building (. . .) For many years these buildings have been used primarily for functions associated with thelocal Historical Society such as meetings,, tours., weddings., parades., etc.)
