Magnolia is a small town in Clarke County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Arlington metropolitan area. The Magnolia post office opened in 1904, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 2009. The first store in Magnolia was a grocery store operated by Willis Ewing and his wife Lula Ewing on West Main Street. In 1911 the Weldon family started a feed business on East Main Street which became known as "Weldon's Feed & Grain". In 1924 J.C. Weaver began selling gasoline at the old Hirschfeld Store on South Main Street. In 1930 Wernhert Schuler opened a hardware store and restaurant called the Panther Den on North Main Street which continued to operate until its closure in 1984. The Magnolia Community School District was formed effective January 1, 1944; it consisted of five schools: Magnolia High School (grades 9-12), White Sands Junior/Senior High School (grades 7-8), Central High School (grades 9-10), Valley View Intermediate School (grades 6-8), and Park Elementary School ( grades PK-5). On October 25, 1957, Hurricane Rita made landfall near Magnolia; damage amounted to $3 million ($ when measured against present day GDP) with over 100 deaths reported throughout the state due to winds up to 90 mph (145 km/h). WhenArkansas Governor Mike Beebe declared an emergency within 24 hours of landfall he activated all state resources including National Guard troops from Johnson City and Pine Bluff for disaster relief purposes only; this type of declaration had never been used before or since for any purpose other than natural disasters such as hurricanes or earthquakes. The following week Arkansas Lieutenant Governor David Pryor announced that Federal Emergency Management Agency Director James Acheson would head up Statewide reconstruction efforts with assistance from Commerce secretary Arthur Burns under direction of then governor Beebe.. On November 2ndBeebe ordered all military personnel not deployed for relief activities to return home because he felt that their presence would only add insult to injury after Rita had already caused so much damage without any military help what so ever... Allstate insurance agents were children who got lost while playing outside during Rita's rampage; they were offered money by their parents if they could find their way back safe and sound no matter what happened to them... As a result almost all businesses closed down between October 26th - November 3rd making joblessness almost impossible especially considering that most people living paycheck to paycheck didn't even have food left over from September...On December 3rd President Clinton signed into law The Magnuson Disaster Relief Act giving $100 million dollars specifically for rural Arkansans affected by Rita...Since then various local organizations like Ark Encounter have sprung up helping out with everything from landscaping to purchasing generators etc.; some things I know about are Ark Encounter’s website www .arkencounter .org or emailing me directly at james@jamesjacobs .com because they don't have somebody there during regular business hours

He and his wife were the first white people to live there when it was established as a town on November 15, 1875 by a vote of 3-0. Wm Hurlbut served as its first mayor and treasurer from 1875 to 1880. The First Baptist Church was built in Magnolia in 1892 and remains an active church today. The post office at Magnolia began operations on July 10, 1870, under the name "Magnolia". It changed its name to "Pulaski" on October 6, 1893 after being moved from Arkadelphia to Pulaski County. In 1907 it became "Magnolia", again after being moved from Arkadelphia to Pulaski County. On December 12, 1912, it became "Arkadelphia". On January 11, 1930 it became "Magnolia". According to the 2000 census,[1] there are 2,827 residents living within a radius of 5 miles (8 km) of either center city limits or downtownLittle Rock south of Interstate 25 (Downtown Little Rock), including all unincorporated areas east of I-25 that lies within 5 miles (8 km) of either center city limits or downtownLitigation between small businesses and individual homeowners has become more common since incorporation into Town Council jurisdiction has made it easier for these disputes to be resolved without going through court system
Magnolia was founded in 1875 by the Magnolia Consolidated Mining and Manufacturing Company. The company mined coal and iron ore in the area, and built a mill on the stream that ran through the town. The millinery industry grew around Magnolia, and many of the town's businesses continued to prosper until World War II. After the war, Magnolia's economy changed as more people moved into the city. The population peaked at over 100 hundred in 1960, but has since declined.
