Magnolia, Arkansas is a town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Portales, AR metropolitan statistical area. Magnolia is located just east of the Arkansas River and north-northwest of Piney Woods Airport. The first people to live in what is now Magnolia were farmers who came from Belle Isle about three miles (4 km) away. They built their homes on high ground overlooking the river and hunted game with bows and arrows. In 1871, a group of farmers named Lewis purchased 640 acres (2 hectares) of land along the Arkansas River in what is now Magnolia. They named their new village after General James Armstrong's home state of Tennessee, which they had come to visit while on a trip to America. In 1873, John AYFORD settled in what is now Magnolia as one of the first white men to reside there after coming overland from Texas via Stagecoach Pass during the American Civil War. After tasting life in America for himself he decided to stay and started an irrigation company that still exists today under his name. He also founded a school which still operates today as Mississippi Valley State University -Magnolia Campus (). In 1901, Nellie HOLMES established her own dry goods store in downtown Magnolia - one of only two such stores west of the Mississippi River at that time In 1924 Wanda DAVIS opened her own grocery store next door to Nellie HOLMES' store,. This was also one of only two grocery stores open west of Memphis at that time In 1951 PEARL LEE BOWEN became owner/operatorof both THE DAILY GROCERY STORES (now known as EBONY MAGAZINE) & THE ENTERTAINMENT CENTER (now known as JEFFERSON CITY TIMES). She operated these businesses until her death in 1984 . Before Pearl Lee Bowen died she sold her interest in EBONYMAGAZINE to Jay Leno for $1 million dollars . Mr. Leno kept EBONYMAGAZINE running until it closed its doors for good on January 3rd 2006 due to a lack of support from management On February 10th 2006 Jay Leno announced he was selling all assets including EBONYMAGAZINE & JEFFERSON CITY TIMES back intoPearl Lee Bowen's hands . From then on it continued as an independently owned business called "The Daily News" until it shutdown again on January 3rd 2006 due to lack Of Support from Management
