In 1911, little more than a hamlet, Fort Gibson had a population of about 100 residents when it became one of three towns west of Pulaski County that received land from USGS mineralologist and politician Francis Pemberton under direction of Vice President James Buchanan as part of the 1904 Navajo Nation Land Act. In 1916–17, during World War I, Fort Gibson saw significant civilian activity due to its strategic location between Fayetteville and Beaumont (then called Benton) counties on either side of White River Valley Bridge; this resulted in an increase in its population from 100 to 300 over two years. A post office called Cedar Rapids serving Cedar Rapids Township & parts unknown until 1902 was established on September 20th 1870 with 4 residents but closed due to lack OF mail service at that time

The name changed again in 1865 when Governor John Anderson named it for Lieutenant Colonel William H. LittleRock, Jr., commander of Union forces at Fort Smith, Arkansas during the Civil War.
