The name Little Rock comes from "Rock River", which flowed through the town before being diverted to form the Arkansas River. The first people to live in what is now Little Rock were individuals who migrated from Tennessee across the Cumberland Gap and settled along the banks of theArkansas River. In 1821, Major General Andrew Jackson's army marched through this area and discovered goldfields near present day Arkadelphia. This led to an influx of settlers, who began clearing land for homes and businesses on what would become downtown Little Rock. By 1835, most of Downtown had been built and business interests had coalesced around a group of men called The Ringling Brothers Circus Company. They continued to operate their circus until 1915 when they sold their property and moved out of town entirely. In 1860s two brothers named John Denton founded Denton & Moore Land Co., one of which developed much of Northeast Arkansas including present day Fort Smith (later renamed Fayetteville). This early development helped spur growth in Little Rock; by 1870 it had reached its current size with over 20 buildings on Broadway between 14th Street NW and 16th Street NW alone In 1871 Frank Ewing established WOODSTOCK LAND CO., one of which was instrumental in helping create what is now Downtown Little Rock as well as portions of Northwest Arkansas
