The Jonesboro Gun Target Club was founded in 1954 by Clarence "Buzz" Davis. The target club meets monthly at the local high school, and offers a variety of activities for members, including shooting competitions, NRA meetings, and clay pigeon matches. The club also provides instruction on how to shoot targets. In 1957, the club moved to its current location at 515 Second Street in Jonesboro. In 1978, the club became a constituent of the NRA. Today, the club hosts skeet and trap tournaments as well as annual summer sniper contests. Jonesboro is a town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 2,734 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Conway Metropolitan Statistical Area. Jonesboro was founded by General John Custer and his men as Camp Supply on July 6, 1867. It was named for Colonel James Ewing Jones, who had been with Custer on his 1866 Expedition into Mexico and later became general manager of the American West Railway. The first post office in Jonesboro was established on December 14, 1868. The present courthouse was built in 1897 and is one of the earliest examples of a concrete block courthouse in Arkansas. The town grew rapidly after it was laid out around a railroad station and coal mine that were developed by local entrepreneurs. The mine closed in 1914 but the railroad continued to be used until it merged intothe Arkansas Railroad Company in 1948. Coal production ended completely within about 10 miles of Jonesboro when new mines opened up closer to downtown Little Rock. Jonesboro experienced rapid growth during World War II due to its proximity to military installations such as Fort Smith and Fort Gibson; however, this growth stopped after 1945 when war-time jobs dried up due to their competition from plants throughout the Southeast created by America's entry into World War II. In recent years there has been some revitalization efforts underway in Jonesboro that are focused on creating new businesses and attracting more people to live and work here; however it still takes several years for any significant change to occur
