In recent years, there has been much discussion about whether or not to add an additional station to the Arkansas State Railroad system in Jonesboro; this would allow for more people living close by who could easily get to work commuting into larger cities like Little Rock or Fayetteville on weekdays and Des Moines on weekends. In 1910, Confederate veteran Will Rogers served as mayor of Jonesboro for one year following his election victory over incumbent James Coker III with 54% of the vote against Coker's 42%. Rogers' term included many important accomplishments such as creating a city hall/library complex and expanding public education opportunities within the black community while also working to improve transportation within the area by building a streetcar system that reached all areas of town by 1925 During World War II, most residents took up arms against Japan or aided their allies through activities such as Helping To Build American Cities (HABAC) or serving in local militias or companies recruited from across Arkansas . Many men died during service or were injured and returned home unable to work because they lacked proper health care supplies or equipment requisitioned by war theaters . Many women also enlisted throughout World War II helping make food available for troops overseas while providing support services such as sewing uniforms , laundry , cleaning barracks etc In 1945 following VE Day whenfinal peace negotiations were concluded between America and Japan,, most residents returned home but some continued military service out of patriotism until its termination four years later
