The Jonesboro area was first settled in the 1800s by white families. The town was named for General Samuel Jones, who led a military expedition against the Seminole Indians in 1818. In 1836, the town became part of Benton County, Arkansas after it was annexed by that county. The population of Jonesboro grew rapidly during the 1830s and 1840s, due to its location close to cotton plantations and easy access to water resources. In 1847, President James K. Polk established the United States Commission on Indian Affairs in Benton County to investigate Indian attacks on white settlers in Arkansas. The commission's report recommended that Benton County be divided into two parts, one with responsibility for Indian affairs, and the other without such responsibilities, so that Native Americans could more easily be assimilated into society. The town of Jonesboro chose to become part of the newportion of Benton County, but it remained an important commercial center until at least 1870. Jonesboro experienced a significant growth spurt during Reconstruction following the American Civil War. In 1872, Mayor John Sibley founded what is now known as Sibley Elementary School in honor of his father-in-law Drayton Wcelverly (1797-1865). By 1880, there were over 1,000 residents living in Jonesboro; it had become a major commercial center with several large stores and businesses dating back to before Reconstruction.
