It is the most populous city in Pulaski County and one of its four incorporated municipalities. Jonesboro is located on the Arkansas River just south of the Arkansas-Oklahoma border. The first defeat of General Joe Johnston's Confederate army occurred here on July 4, 1864 as Union forces under Major General Ulysses S. Grant crossed the river and advanced upriver to Jonesboro before turning back downstream for lack of supplies and reinforcements. The large cotton fields that once surrounded Jonesboro are now less productive due to irrigation systems and other advances in agriculture but their history lives on through their architecture which reflects early 19th century Southern plantation life As well as the many places where local artists have exhibited their work, such as The Arts District Gallery which opened in 2006 along with Theater Junction arts complex across from Main Street. In addition to art appreciation there are several interesting museums located within minutes' drive of Jonesboro including Centennial Museum (a National Historic Landmark), Oral Roberts University Museum of Art, ARTSoken Collection Gallery and numerous small businesses clustered around downtown core that offer unique experiences not found elsewhere in Pulaski County

Jonesboro was originally founded in 1871 by Andrew Jones and his family. The town is named for General Nathan Bedford Forrest, the Confederate general who served in Arkansas during the Civil War. The city was incorporated on December 1, 1907. In 1939, Jonesboro became the largest city in Pulaski County when it was merged with Little Rock.
