Jonesboro is the county seat of Pulaski County. The first settlement in what would become Jonesboro was made by white men on November 12, 1822 when they arrived from Tennessee to purchase land east of Fort Smith. The town was named for General Daniel Boone and his family who had settled there in 1786. In 1824, Jumper & Brown erected a log schoolhouse which served as the township's first courtship meeting place with Mr. John Sevier officiating as teacher and groomer for local blacksmiths and wagonmakers working for Jumper & Brown. In 1828, James Waddell platted what became known as "Old Town" on land that he had purchased from Andrew Jackson during the Indian Removal Act of 1830-31 In 1840, Rev Jesse White organized a Methodist Episcopal church in Jonesboro with twentyeight members and began construction of a large brick church which opened on December 2nd of that year. A post office called Old Town was established in 1841 under the jurisdiction of Island Springs Presbyterian Church; it continued until 1865 when it changed its name to Jonesboro because Pulaski County did not have an official seat until then. The building now used as a public library occupied this location until 1992 when it moved to its current location adjacent to US Highway 260 just north of US Highway 237

The first post office in Jonesboro was established in 1881; it was renamed Memphis in 1902 due to an act of Congress.[5] During World War II, numerous munitions plants were built in and around Jonesboro and nearby Decatur (population 6,000) because production of TNT (Tornado nerve gas) had become important to the war effort as a result of advances in chemical warfare technology. These plants produced more than two million tons (four hundred thousand metric tons) of TNT;[6][7] about one-third came from Great Britain alone.[8][9]
