Jonesboro, Arkansas is a small town located in Pulaski County, Arkansas. The population was 5,511 at the 2010 census. It is the former home of the University of Arkansas at Jonesboro, now known as the Jonesboro State University. The town was established in 1881 and named after General John A. Jones. The first post office in Jonesboro was established on October 9, 1881. The present-day town was laid out by Jeptha Heston and others in 1882. In 1907, it became a city and remained so until 1923 when it reverted to its rural status. The first store in town was built on Main Street between 1889 and 1890 by Wm Blythe and Bros., which continued to operate until 1903 when it closed because of financial difficulties. A second store opened on Third Street between 1893 and 1895 by Ephraim Sievers & sons does business still today as an Exxon gas station/convenience store with two gasoline pumps for customers to buy gasoline or food from vendors set up outside their doors during warm weather days (and often remain open into the winter). A school for black children called Tuskegee Normal School opened in 1908 on Third Street under auspices of the Southern Baptist Convention; however, due to financial problems this institution failed within three yearsometime before 1914 when John Fenton took control of it from the SB Conventions efforts After World War I ended, most white farmers returned to their farming practices while many blacks left for work opportunities available outside of Arkansas; however some did stay behind such as Jeptha Heston who purchased land near what is now Interstate 40 east of town and started building homes thereon starting around 1922 In 1924 he donated 1/2 mile northward along I-40 from his property line east past what is now US 20 to become part of downtown Jonesboro where he lived until his death in 1978 . Another pioneer that followed Jeptha’s lead were local businessmen Harry Monahan Sr., Harry Monahan Jr., Tom Kipperman & Jack Kipperman who founded Kennedys Store Incorporated which operated successfully across both I-40 & MainStreet into the 1970’s including being one of only four convenience stores remaining open universallly following prohibition .....In 1984 thru 1987 Mr Harry Monahan Sr donated another half mile easterly along I-40 just south OfMainStreet To become Downtown Kennedys Mall also Now Closed
