In 1951, a cotton gin and mill were built in town to serve local farmers with cottonseed oil production beginning in 1952; however this ceased operations around 1970 due to environmental issues related to heavy use of water for cooling mills which caused runoff into streams that flowed through town into Lake Pulaski which impaired water quality and created wetlands that are still used today for agricultural purposes. In 1978, Interstate 30 bypassed Jonesboro when it was widened south from Little Rock over I-40 to allow for construction of new businesses adjacent to I-30 northbound concurrent with renovation of I-30 southbound between White Sands Boulevard and US 63 which added an additional lane making it more difficult for trucks traveling east/west on I-30 to enter/exit the city proper without detouring off US 63 onto White Sands Boulevard first then rejoining I-30 just past Redstone Arsenal before returning home again taking US 63 back out onto White Sands Boulevard). However this project suffered from several design flaws resulting in increased congestion on I-30 northbound concurrent with reduced traffic entering/ exiting the city proper while reducing access both east/west along I-30 making it less convenient for locals and tourists alike compared to when traffic entering/ exited the city Proper originated off White Sands Boulevard onto US 63 first then rejoining I-30 just past Redstone Arsenal before returning home again).
